چکیده

We propose a finite-horizon continuous-time framework for coalitional bargaining that has the following features: (i) Expected payoffs in Markov-perfect equilibrium (MPE) are unique, generating sharp predictions and facilitating comparative statics investigations; (ii) MPE are the only subgame-perfect Nash equilibria (SPNE) of the model that can be approximated by SPNE of nearby discrete-time bargaining models satisfying a genericity condition, providing justification for focusing on MPE in our model; (iii) The model is relatively tractable analytically. We investigate MPE payoffs as the time horizon goes to infinity. In convex games, we connect these limit payoffs to the core of the characteristic function underlying the bargaining game. ∗We would like to thank Jeremy Bulow, Drew Fudenberg, Vijay Krishna, Eric Maskin, Maria Montero, Philip Reny, Larry Samuelson, József Sákovics, Muhamet Yildiz, and seminar participants at Princeton University, IAS at Princeton, Harvard University, Chicago University, University of Edinburgh, University of Nottingham, University of Essex, the 2008 AEA meetings, the John Nash 2008 conference, and the SED 2008 Conference on Economic Design for useful comments, and Niels Joaquin for valuable research assistance. †Department of Economics, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138, [email protected] ‡Department of Economics, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138, [email protected]

A continuous model of multilateral bargaining with random arrival times∗

This paper proposes a continuous-time model framework of bargaining, which is analytically tractable even in complex situations like coalitional bargaining. The main ingredients of the model are: (i) players get to make offers according to a random arrival process; (ii) there is a deadline that ends negotiations. In the case of n-player group bargaining, there is a unique subgame-perfect Nash e...

Does It Pay to Play? How Bargaining Shapes Donor Participation in the Funding of Environmental Protection∗

Multilateral funding for global environmental protection, such as biodiversity conservation, requires donor participation. When are donors willing to participate? We examine a game-theoretic model of multilateral funding for environmental projects in developing countries. Donors must first decide whether to participate in a multilateral institution. They do so in anticipation of a bargaining ou...

Multilateral Bargaining in Networks

We introduce a noncooperative multilateral bargaining model for a network-restricted environment, in which players can communicate only with their neighbors. Each player can strategically choose the bargaining partners among the neighbors and buy their communication links with upfront transfers. We characterize a condition on network structures for efficient equilibria: An efficient stationary ...

We consider an n-player bargaining problem where the utility possibility set is compact, convex, and stricly comprehensive. We show that a stationary subgame perfect Nash equilibrium exists, and that, if the Pareto surface is differentiable, all such equilibria converge to the Nash bargaining solution as the length of a time period between offers goes to zero. Without the differentiability assu...

Multilateral Bargaining and Downstream Competition

We examine multilateral bargaining in vertical supply relationships which involve an upstream manufacturer who sells through two competing retailers to end consumers. In these relationships the negotiations are inter-dependent and a bargaining externality may arise across the retailers. In addition, the timing by which the manufacturer negotiates with the retailers becomes important. The manufa...
